"McGrann's Processing."

Here is your chance to live in a friendly small town - Geraldine has 300 people - and make a living custom butchering local cows, pigs, sheep year-round and wild game during the hunting seasons. Wild game typically consists of deer, antelope and elk. The present owners have not operated the shop for a few years, but they just took a survey to see if people would like to see the shop open again, and they collected over 200 signatures!

Many people have asked the previous owners to start the business back up because they have to travel so far and wait so long to get their animals slaughtered or to just purchase a half or quarter of beef, so we know there is a demand for the business to be in operation. Due to health reasons, the present owners had to give it up - too many birthdays can get in the way sometimes...

Believe it or not, the price includes the real estate and the equipment to run it!

The building is 36' x 46' plus the coolers added to the back. As you may be able to tell from one of the pictures, the coolers / freezers where the meat is stored are refrigerated semi trailers (not on wheels, of course). There are three of them, which are divided into coolers and freezers.

Here is a breakdown of the sizes of the rooms / coolers / freezers:

Office 7' x 7'6"
Meat Cutting / wrapping Room 14' x 15'
Cooler #1 7' x 30'
Cooler #2 7' x 33'
Cooler #3 7'6" x 9'6"
Freezer #1 7' x 12'
Freezer #2 7' x 13'
Smoker for jerky, hams, etc. 4' wide x 5'deep x 6'6" tall
Slaughter room 12' x 23'

The shop comes with most of the equipment to get the business started, such as a bandsaw, cutting & tall wrapping tables, baskets for freezing meat, rollers for hanging carcasses, an electric hoist for lifting, scales 12' x 23' for weighing, etc. The overhead door has an electric door opener. One of the freezers has a brand new compressor.

The legal description of the property is lots 8 and 9 of block 10 of the original townsite of Geraldine, Montana. The lots together are 50' wide and 140' deep.

This gallery starts with the town of Geraldine, shows the butcher shop with the coolers and the inside of the shop. Then I am driving down the road and took photos of the windmills. The last batch of photos is of the Union Hotel and Fort Benton.

About the Area

Geraldine is near the Upper Missouri River, between Fort Benton to the north and Lewistown to the SE. For the really big shopping spree you would probably have to drive to Great Falls. There are many lakes around Geraldine and if you are handy with the fishing pole, you can supplement the steady meat diet with some fish! Geraldine is close to the Highwood Mountain range, along with "Square Butte" mountain and "Round Butte" mountain.

The nearest major city is Great Falls - roughly 65,000 people. Fort Benton has about 1,600 people. Great Falls is 70 miles from Geraldine. Geraldine is a quiet small town for those tired of city life! It is very laid back and the people are friendly and take care of one another.

Fort Benton to the north is rich in history and the county seat of Chouteau County, the largest small-grain producing county in Montana. Steeped in a traditional agriculture lifestyle, Fort Benton is home to an outstanding school system that has won the Academic Achievement Award for its class the first six years of the competition, as well as being a runner-up two out of the last eight years.

The traditional agriculture and livestock economic base combines with the newer tourist related businesses to contribute to the Fort Benton business climate. Three doctors and other medical professionals on staff at the local hospital offer a well-rounded medical facility.

Hotel and motel accommodations, fine dining and a downtown area steeped in history are easily accessible by way of a trail that follows the Missouri River and its scenic beauty as it meanders through Fort Benton.

Signal Point Golf Course, overlooking Fort Benton, offers a challenging nine-hole public course. Fort Benton as well as Geraldine offer an outdoor swimming pool, ice-skating during the winter months, two of the best museums in the west and beautiful park system. Picnic shelters in Old Fort Park are available for large or small groups. An outdoor recreation area next to the pool accommodates basketball, horseshoes and tennis.

Besides being the gateway to the Wild and Scenic Upper Missouri River, Fort Benton is located near to all of the spectacular scenery and historical sites of North Central Montana and some of the finest camping, hiking and blue ribbon fishing in the spring, summer and fall - all of this on un-crowded highways.
