Managed Land improvement projects
Purebred cattle rancher for over 40 years
Lynn Hildebrand lives now on a ranchette in Bridger, Montana, but still helps his children to run their ranches and farms. He graduated from Fort Collins, Colorado in 1963 with a Bachelor's Degree in Animal Science and a Minor in Forage Production. He has experience in Livestock Judging and owned and operated ranches in Nebraska, Wyoming, Colorado and Montana. He is familiar with all the inns and outs of irrigation in this semi-arid country and has raised thousands of purebred Angus cattle, winning many prizes. He has managed several land improvement projects and has 20 years experience showing and fitting cattle for major State Fairs, local shows and sales and the National Western Stock show in Denver.
At one time he had one of the nations highest averages for an Annual production sale. He was the first
area farmer to successfully set up and operate a rotational grazing system on irrigated pasture and he was the first area farmer to setup 30" row and high moisture corn storage and feeding program. One of the first area Angus breeds to send bulls to a central test station; the first area Angus breeder to purchase performance tested bulls from a central test station. He was also one of the first Angus breeders to utilize Artificial Insemination (Al.) In Wyoming he managed three pivot circles, two Valleys and one Kroy, plus two towline irrigated systems. He raised beans, corn and hay under the circles and also did some wheat
farming. When he had a registered Angus Cattle operation, he did all the paper work and performance
data, having a production sale once a year and handled all the work on this also, plus all phases of
commercial livestock production and management of 500-1000 head backgrounding feedlot.
MORE ACCOMPLISHMENTS:
First on farm production sales of all yearling bulls in the Prairie Center area; first farmer to successfully
raise corn and pinto beans in the area; one of the originators of Platte Valley Feeders Association for
custom feeding of cattle; one of the originators of the Wyoming Beef Cattle Improvement Association.
1988- 2003 Red Lodge, Montana area. Have 200 Purebred Angus cows mainly out on share programs.
Sell and manage my share of calves including feedlot arrangements, etc. Calved out limited number of
cows, design and manage breeding program for all cattle. Work part-time (9 months/year) for Shoshone
Angus. In charge of the Red Lodge ranch including: 1. pasture fertilizing and weed control, 2. irrigation
and pasture rotation management, 3. care and overseeing of about 600 head of purebred Angus cattle for
the summer months. First Red Lodge rancher to design and operate a gravity flow sprinkler irrigation system, one of the first ranchers to successfully manage a fall weed control system.
CROP EXPERIENCE:
Corn, Oats, Dry Beans, Alfalfa, Irrigated pasture, Native grasses, Introduced grasses, Spring and Winter
wheat and some Sugar Beets.
EQUIPMENT EXPERIENCE:
Six row 30" corn and bean planter. Plowing, disking and all seed bed preparations. Planting and
cultivating. Forage choppers, weed sprayers, mowers, swathers, square balers, bale wagons, feed grain
grinders, combines, 100 plus horsepower 2-4 wheel drive tractors and smaller tractors plus 4 wheel drive
payloaders, several types of feed wagons.
